Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, AL4 8ES
A traditional country pub run by Anthony and Faith in a woodland setting on the edge of Hertfordshire's Heartwood Forest, with historical roots as the named refuge of preacher John Bunyan. Now a free house serving 3–4 ales and working with local brewers. The pub is distinctly quirky, adorned with over 700 plates and jugs, and offers darts and shove halfpenny. A roaring winter fire keeps it cosy. The large outdoor seating area and grassed grounds appeal to walkers, cyclists, motorcyclists and dog walkers alike. Note: children under 12 are restricted from the dining and drinking areas outside private parties, though they may use other facilities.
